Pictures Time [May. 28th, 2008|02:47 am]
So I have millions and millions of photos. First off there are the galleries from Anime Central. I was cosplaying Miranda, [info]redjack_ryan was Krory, [info]brightdreamer was Lavi, [info]alararose was Allen, [info]trunknebold (Chuck) was Skin, Tree was Lenali, [info]priestessfilia was Road, Eowyn was Tiki, [info]__kat__ was Timcanpy.

I'm still working on uploading, so if you want everything you may want to return later, but here's where I'm putting them. BTW in the upper folders on this gallery you can find Melody's photos too.

millions of Acen photos

Also, while sorting through photos for this I also came across and uploaded some silly photos of Bryer. My favorites are the one form the St Patrick's day party at which Bryer and the hosts's boston terrier, Bonnie started out fighting and tussling, then they flirted a few minutes and then they apparently decided to kiss and make up. I've never seen dogs actually kiss before, but Bryer and Bonnie were extremely interested in sitting there licking each other repeatedly in the mouth. Very cute, and slightly disturbing.

It followed us home, can we keep it? [Mar. 7th, 2008|10:53 pm]
[Tags|, ]

So, Chuck, Theresa and I took bryer to a nearby park for a walk. When we got there we noticed a little lost puppy whimpering nad wandering around in the baseball diamond. He happily followed us around on our walk around the park. Well we couldn't just leave him there, and we checked all around the park and there were no other cars much less other people. I don't know exactly which all places I should check, but we were thinking of calling an animal shelter to see if this puppy has been reported missing. Also I think I may check the newspapers and we'll be going back near the park to see if signs get posted. Until then Bryer is nearly bursting iwth excitement over how much fun he's having with his new playmate, and the puppy doesn't seem to mind much.

In other news, I've heard about the new Slayers series and I can't wait to see it. It looks like some sort of joint venture, perhaps, since I see as much news about the English VAs as about the Japanese ones. I hope they get it released quickly. I wonder if that's why they're putting out the new box sets too. Too bad, I won't want to buy it a disk at a time, so I may have to rent it so I can wait for tbe collector's box.

LOL [Jan. 15th, 2008|02:17 pm]
So I just saw this internet video of a dancing cockatoo, and thought immediately of Diane's Bird.

Dancing Bird

In other news, I went to Chicago on Sunday with ALex, Chuck and Tree. It was pretty, fun, we should do it more often, even though it's not cheap. We went to the "White Palace Diner" near the southgate mall for breakfast. They had fantastic food and it was fairly cheap! We then went downtown to go to the lego store and the Michigan street shops. Parking is a pain, but shopping was fun. Alex somehow escaped the Lego store only spending 27$ which was a new record low for him. It helped that he had some free boxes accumulated.

We walked down and looked at the various shops along the way buying some calendars and checking the malls and finally went to the Lush store, where I wanted to go to see if the Karma stuff smelled as Hippyish as I imagined. Chuck stayed outside, but Alex came in and soon had lotions and stuff rubbed onto his hands. Then Chuck saw a guy in the lobby whose shoelace was stuck and decided to help. He came in and stood RIGHT behind the Lush girl who was helping us and said "Hey, Tree, can I borrow your knife?" The Lush girl jumped a bit, turned, and showed Chuck how big her knife was. Apparently Chuck was immediately smitten because after helping the guy in the lobby he came back in and hung around watching the Lush girl and being uncharacteristically helpful and pleasant for being in a store he'd whined about being dragged to. He's been lamenting ever since that he didn't get her name.
As for me, I was content. The Karma scent was less hippyish than my imagination, but it made me sneeze, so it's off my list. But I really liked the Peachy massage bars that were on clearance.

We finished by going to dinner at the "Chicago Pizza and Oven Grinder" which is a restaurant that specializes in Pizza Pot Pies and giant servings. The pizzas are built inside a bowl with the crust draped over the top, so when they flip it upsidedown and remove the bowl you get a pizza bowl. We ate one Mediterranean bread, one small salad, two pizza pies, and the rum cream dessert and had plenty of food for everyone, and brought home 1/3 of the salad and the 3rd pizza pie that we didn't need to have ordered.

I'm a graduate now! [Jan. 8th, 2008|01:41 pm]
Whee, I've not updated here in forever. Lots of stuff has been happening. The biggest thing is that I finally graduates! I now have my degree in Industrial Technology and I'm seeking a job. I got some good Christmas and graduation gifts. But it's kind of weird not having school to go back to anymore. I did just have an interview in Wisconsin with Kimberly Clark and I'm waiting ot hear back.

In entertainment I've really been enjoying Hayate No Gotoku because it's so ridiculously far out. I finished reading Death Note and was happy with it. On american TV I'm sad that there's almost nothing new on now because of the strike, but I did enjoy Chuck and Reaper while they lasted and now I'm thinking I should have caught Pushing Daisies. In movies Sweeney Todd is awesome, as I would have expected from anything with Johhny Depp singing as a crazy serial killer.

Random Bleach Boyfriend Quiz [Oct. 19th, 2007|01:15 am]
Ok, so this is 100% proof that I have the attention span of a gnat. I came here to read Melody's post and instead I'm doing quizzes that do NOT make me a pedophile. But dang, Toshiro is so cool.

The Best Bleach Boyfriend for You
Your Result: Hitsugaya Toshiro

Surprise! You are attracted to short men with vivid green eyes. This particular one, however, is much older than he appears -- and a genius to boot. His innate deductive reasoning and his unwavering dedication to his work may not make him the best candidate for warming your cold nights at first glance, but in reality he's a devoted friend and lover who will kill anyone who even attempts to hurt a strand of hair on your head. The only drawback of a relationship with this guy is that strangers on the street think you're a pedophile.

Feast and Battle [Oct. 6th, 2007|01:04 am]
So, I will be busy/gone both this weekend and next. Both weekends I'm participating in the Strolling Singers group which does historically accurate songs and dresses for period reenactments for various historical feasts that are set roughly around 1800. This weekend it's the Battle of Missessenewa 1812, which is pretty fun. THey're really strict on the historical accuracy and they have a nifty battle reenactment too. Nest weekend is the Feast of the Hunter's Moon here in Lafayette. This one is set a little earlier and we tend to try to match that period which is fine since people tended to keep clothes around a lot longer back then. It wasn't like today when, if you wore something from the 80s, everyone would stare at you like you're crazy.

YAAAARR!! Avast, these landlubbing scalywags are fools to stand in the way of my swashbuckling! [Sep. 19th, 2007|12:11 pm]
Yaar! It be Talk Like A Pirate Day, and I be stuck in class and going to work, but I will be expecting a good reward for my toils! I've had plenty of swashbuckling to do the past few weeks.

In my Trusty Vessel (house) we've picked up a passenger. His name is Su-yong and he's a Korean grad student who is seeking a job with his aerospace engineering major and having trouble finding one due to his lack of citizenship. But he pays rent promptly each month, doesn't make a mess. In fact we sometimes go days without actually seeing him since he stays in his room when he's home and spends over half the day on campus. He's even got a mini fridge in there. It's a little odd, but it works.

I've also started seeing more booty by signing up as a Pampered Chef consultant under [info]brightdreamer (You're my boss Melly!) My main goal is to get myself set up with a bunch of the really awesome kitchen stuff because I'm really impressed with the quality of it all. And I'm glad that Melody isn't nagging me since I'm definitely too busy to do a whole lot of shows, but I'm hoping that the one I'm hosting tomorrow will be very successful, and then I'm going to ask around at the neighborhood social on the 30th to see if anyone in the neighborhood wants to host another party. I will miss my neighborhood when/if I move out. It's a beautiful neighborhood and they try to get together as a community periodically.

I also am STILL working on listening to all of my MP3s. I've got my new 80GB Ipod, and it has about 30 GB of songs. Currently I'm down to only 8 days of unlistened to music left. I also am trying to filter out approximately 20% of the songs that I like less. And I want all of it to have good, accutate labels and that's a HUGE project when you've got more than 4000 songs from everywhere under the sun, 1500 of which are anime songs which tend to come with badly done tags. ;_;

In closing, YAAAAAR!

Unions - Too much potential for abuse [Aug. 15th, 2007|09:38 pm]
So, here I am on my last day at Fairfield, and I've finally come to the bottom of the whole issue with the bathrooms, and the root problem: poorly managed unions.

For some background, Fairfield is a job-shop type gear manufacturing plant which was family owned for a long time. Some years back they were bought out, and I think around the same time the workers decided to unionize. They've only had their union for maybe 15 years now, so it wasn't founded back in the old days when they were really neccessary. And the union founders still work here and are way high up in power in the union.

So, there are several bathrooms here, and I've noticed that almost no-one uses the one that's close to here. I didn't use it for a long time because it stank like cigarette smoke. Well today my badge wouldn't let me into the offices where the bathroom I usually use it located, so I used the smoky one and caught Sherry, one of the Union founders, in there smoking. She was very in my face about how "THEY" keep taking away the worker's rights to smoke and how she just smokes up there. Well I've heard more than a few other workers complain about this, but apparently it's against union policy to "report" on one of your "Union Brothers". Instead, you're supposed to bring complaints to the union heirarchy.... of which Sherry is the top on this shift. Well I'm not in the union, so I went ahead and complained.. and the complaint got directed to the union heirarchy on this shift, which is Sherry, who shrugged it off.

This just disgusts me. Even looking beyond the fact that she's smoking in the bathroom which bothers me on a personal level, it disgusts me that she uses her rank in the union to feel that she's above any rules. It disgusts me that any union would forbid its members to report problems to the managment and then disregard those problems because they want to do whatever they want. It also bothers me that she thinks that smoking inside is "her right" which "THEY" tried to take away and that's how she justifies her behaviour.

Edward Elric and the Deathly Hallows [Aug. 2nd, 2007|11:14 am]
OK, I had just about the coolest dream I've ever had last night. The dream bore some resemblance to Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, in that Harry was on the run from Voldemort, only there was no Harry. He was actually Edward Elric.

There were a number of Aurors/Alchemists helping him out, taking him by car down a street with veeery impressive huge old stone mansions, etc. Ed decided to disguise himself by dying his hair black and taking the braid out, but people still recognized him. At some point there was a high speed car chase around an Indy500 type race track with many changes of vehicles, and Ed ended up in the forest hiding out. [info]ariandara showed up as an Auror and helped Ed out for a while. There were also scenes in a shopping mall with a really bizzaire women's bathroom, and on a beach before Ed went back to Hogwarts. He suddenly remembered he had an invisibility cloak so he could sneak around. Voldemort searched for him with a giant glowing eye similar to the eye of Sauron, but couldn't see him under the cloak. Neville was there as a teacher and head of the Griffindors and was strangly married to some random witch who didn't recognize Ed. (If it was Luna, then she'd gone a little crazy-er o.O) It ended with Ed taking flight in a magically transmuted giant, red, flying, chinese dragon, and then Voldemort showed up with a much larger giant, greenish-yellow, flying, chinese dragon whose tail was powered by Death Eaters. Ed ended up evading Voldemort and getting himself lost in the middle of a huuuuuge forest, and then I woke up.

The dream was very strange, and a little annoying in that it was endlessly trying to get away better and not succeeding. I often have dreams in which I'm being chased by something perpetually and can't ever get away far enough to be safe. It was somewhere between 3rd person and 1st person, switching back and forth.

But, what I've learned from it is that Aria, you kick butt. And I think the Harry Potter books would have been better with Ed as the main character. He could have killed Voldemort in book 4, and then gone back to searching for a way to get back his real arm, while proving himself the best Quiddich player ever.

Draco and the Malfoys [Jul. 30th, 2007|12:49 pm]
So I managed to get a DAY OFF Sunday. This is neat because my manager at Circuit City has made it clear that if I want to keep my job I'll be having to work both weekend days for the rest of the back to school season (so I will not have any days off in that time since I'm working both jobs).

On my Day Off, Kat happened to mention that she was going to a concert and it sounded too amusing to pass by. Draco and the Malfoys They were a fair bit better than Harry and the Potters for whom they were opening. The band consisted of 4th year Malfoy who looked vaguely like a Weasley, and 7th year Malfoy who'd shaved his head. About half of their songs were about "Some boy at Hogwarts who gets too much attention for his own good." My favorite was one that went something like "Voooooldymort, all I want for chirstmas is for Harry Potter to dissappear." and went on about how he didn't even need for that mudblood to get injured, or deoderant for Crabbe and Goyle. Near the end of the show I think they utterly confused and shocked their heartland crowd by randomly doing what I believe was a stage kiss. I admit it kinda scared me a bit to see it live, even though I only think they did it for the reaction. And it did bring to mind a veeeeeery interesting fic of Sharlenes involving Draco, some magic, Draco's new duplicate, and ... smut. And one other amusing thing was when the Draco who looked vaguely like a Weasley turned up later with a red and yellow tie and was introduced as Bill Weasley on the drums for Harry and the Potters.

I also, on this day off, had a surprising amount of fun simply wandering around downtown Indianapolis! It's a fairly interesting city. The asian girl in the mall trying to sell combs with false hair on them asked me to try one on and then seemed taken aback when she saw how much hair I had on the back of my head. I was told, very frankly, that I have too much hair and that I should buy her $60 beaded haircomb. ^^;;

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Spoiler Free) [Jul. 27th, 2007|11:57 am]
So I finally finished the Harry Potter book. It seems I'm very slow in comparison, but I actually just think all of you are insane to read it that fast. :P And I had to share my copy with Tree who seemed to think she got first dibs because she paid for it.

Overall I thought it was pretty good. It was full of magic and adventure, and everything got wrapped up nicely. Some of the characters were a little flatter than I might have hoped, but that's always been my main problem with HP books. The epilogue was pretty lame, but epilogues often are. I did have a problem with some of the suddenness or the pointlessness of certain things. And JK Rowlings can NOT write romance. Not even a little. But for the most part I really enjoyed the book.

I also watched the newer movie finally, at the 3-D Imax, last Sunday. THe movie on the Imax was fun. The climactic ride towards the end was neat in 3d. The rest of the 3d was kinda cool, but a little disorienting as there was ghosting. The movie itself was pretty good. It obviously left a lot out, but Luna rocked!

Sitting on the porch [Jun. 30th, 2007|11:46 am]
I am sitting on my porch waiting for people to buy my junk. It's not as busy as I'd hoped, but I've already hit $65 which isn't bad. And I've got a few more hours and two more mini fridges. if the fridges don't sell I can put up ads in the dorms. If the water bed doesn't sell it's getting a "FREE" sign ^^;; I will NOT put it back into my basement.

UPDATE: Yay, the water bed sold, and another mini fridge! At $145 Goal is reached! I'm all excited to organize the basement now that I'll have more room, too.

Stuff and work [Jun. 30th, 2007|01:17 am]
So continual stuff always going on...

Tomorrow I'm finally having my garage sale to sell all the junk I got from the dorms when the students moved out. My goal is to make about $100-150 in profits. If I fall short that's ok, but all I'll really have to do to get there is sell two of the mini fridges for about $35 and then maybe half the furniture and rugs. Everything else will be bonus.

I'm also enjoying work for the most part. I know it's going to be great experience. But Sunanda, the other intern I'm working with, got on my nerves today. work rant )

AMPL casserole and heavy duty gears [Jun. 4th, 2007|10:12 pm]
So, this week I start my second week of work at Fairfield. I got a summer internship. Yay! This will be very good for me when looking for a job when I graduate, since I've no intention at all of staying at Circuit City for the rest of my life. Faifield is a top manufacturer of precision and heavy duty gears. They are used in things like scissor lifts, mining trucks, trains, cranes, etc. My job, for the summer, will be planner support for the 1-12 inch production area, and particularly the 7000 series assembly which is having inventory issues and is getting ready to go through a changeover to new equipment.

My brother, Chuck, also got a job with the purchasing department of the same company and he's demonstrated an uncanny ability for finding free food. He's tipped me off to donuts, pretzels or bagels and which offices they're in every single day. And when we had a free luncheon, of course, he was not only first in line, but he took the most back with him afterwards.

I'm working with a very nice, but also very curious girl from India, named Sunanda. She grew up and went to college in India and now she's doing graduate studies at Purdue. Apparently she's spent 2 years her now and her English is very good, but I've already taught her a wealth of new words like "Casserole" and Chuck taught her "Redneck." She's fascinated by everything, and constantly demanding to know "WHY?" so when she kept asking why Chuck was named "chuck" I told her she should greet him saying "What's up, Chuck?" which was soon followed by a definition of "up-chuck".

Shortly following all the discussion of how casseroles are classic American food, Tree and Chuck got together and decided to invent one. The AMPL ("ample") which stands for American Meat and Potato Loaf. Chuck describes it as an american lasagna, but it's basically just a very thin meatloaf with steak fries covered with katsup and cheeze layered on top. It was very tasty although it seemed almost like a hamburger with fries. literally. It also worked really well in my wonderful new stoneware baking dish!

COn! [May. 20th, 2007|01:41 am]
So, Acen was really fun, as always. I will get the pics posted soon, but I've been distracted, and most of mine were just duplicates of other people's except for my shots of the One Piece photo session.

Elf-Con was definitely fun. I wish more of you could have come, and I think we'll definitely have to do something similar again. However Chuck is really relieved it's over since he was wanting to watch a movie or TV or anything but anime all week and he utterly failed. I'm glad that he was so nice about letting me monopolize the TV room for an entire week to marathon lots of anime ^_^

Also, the pampered chef party was fun. I somewhat failed as a host since I didn't get enough people to come. A lot fo those who I invited at work I didn't think to get their phone #s and I didn't go to work to remind them before the party so none of them showed up. ;_; But Melody, if you get this by morning, can you explain how the ordering thing works? Kelly wants the Awesome Pitcher and I'm not sure how I can go about having her order it and credit it to my party, but I said I'd try to find out for her and I'll be seeing her again tomorrow.

Lastly my manager threw stuff at me at work today. He was not very pleased, although he was understanding about the fact that I got an internship Internship YAY! Getting paid almost 50% more per hour YAY! I also, unintentionally sneakily told one of the other managers about it and then was too busy with Elf-con to get back to Michael right away. This meant that Steve had to break the news to Michael who was not happy, but who had more of a chance to come to terms with it by the time I got to seeing him. He only threw a few rubber bands and a pen at me.

So I'm going to be working at Fairfield this summer which should be fun. They're a manufacturer of specialty gears and they're right here in town. I will be working on Lean Manufacturing projects, which should be good, as it's fun to help places improve their processes.

Debate of the day: Swatstika [May. 6th, 2007|02:42 am]
So, I was looking at One Piece info online today when I wandered across the Wikipedia entry for Whitebeard Pirates and noticed the comments about the emblem for these pirates being changed to have the manji removed so that people wouldn't think it was a swatstika. Follow the links through wikipedia if you want and you'll find other articles about the history of the swatstika as a symbol and how it dates back to ancient times in pretty much all cultures with the most common meaning being that of a good luck symbol or a symbol of endless cycles. One of the articles that made my brain hurt the most was the following describing how swatstika's are offensive to some and should therefore be removed everywhere.

Now when I say debate of the day, I want to know the opinions of the rest of you. Yeah, I'm curious.

Myself? I think it's completely silly to ban an ancient and culturally significant symbol based upon one group having chosen to use it for to represent something horrible. Yes, what happened to the Jews during WWII was horrible, and no, their pain should not be trivialized, nor should the horrors be forgotten. However, jsut as the Jews themselves wouldn't want their history to be reduced to nothing but pity for their suffering in the past 100 years, this symbol should not be reduced to a single usage. Furthermore, it really upsets me when I see people destroying history. To hear of people complaining that they're offended by a symbol of luck adorning buildings that were built before WWII and saying that they want these historical treasures destroyed... This bothers me a lot. I also don't think that such a simple and yet cool symbol with so much positive historical significance and connotation should be just up and banned. That would be almost like banning a note and saying that this one pitch should never be used again because it was previously used by the KKK in a theme song while they burned villiages.

The Elfinator: out to vanquish stupidity [Apr. 24th, 2007|08:51 pm]
One of these days I may just snap and run around with a giant rubber stamp marking "IDIOT" on the foreheads of about 90% of the people wandering around.

The current top of my list is my professor in my senior design class and department head of Purdue's Industrial Technology department. This man is obsessive, rude, inconsiderate and very inflexible. I recently got back my second exam only to find out I got a 28 out of 60. Luckily the proffessor scaled it 10 points, something he only did because HE screwed up, forgot to include a chart we were supposed to use for one problem, and let the idiot TA give us class evaluations during that time, cutting into a time slot which was already pretty short for this particular test. Then, when I looked the test over, the TA hadn't even bothered to grade one part, and he also took off points on another part on which my only mistake was doing the problem in a logical fashion rather than taking the lazy and not very accurate route.

The problem in question asked us to calculate the # of pallets needed to store X number of boxes with given dimensions. I thought it would be logical to calculate how many boxes would actually fit on each pallet and then go from there. The teacher, however, expected us to simply calculate the volume of each pallet and divide it by the volume of each box. This is very inaccurate when you have irregularly shaped boxes and is a common problem that causes many warehouses to be designed with not enough freaking space. It's also moronic. However 15 minutes of arguing later, and several lectures about how I should take responsibility and accept the failing grade that I had earned he finally decided to, oh so kindly, give me 5 points out of 10 for it. I'll take the 5 points, but it almost makes me madder for him to be so condescending and act like he's being nice when giving me a failing grade for doing the problem in a way that is much more accurate and more RIGHT than the lazy way he did it.
